Pianist Spreads the Power of Music

“When playing the piano at home, I open the windows so the trees, the birds, and my neighbor’s dogs can enjoy the music.”

15-year-old pianist Qiao Zhang performs Mozart’s Concerto in A Major with the Music Teachers’ Association of California Glendale Concerto Orchestra. He writes:

When I knew that From the Top would have a special episode featuring musicians with disabilities, I decided to resume my application and share my story. Despite the challenges I face in my life, I remain a happy and confident person. It is music that gives me faith, confidence, direction, and hope. Music has transformed my life.

Putting my hands on the piano, I’m instantly transformed. Speaking the language of music, I’m articulate, expressive, and confident. Music enables me to express my feelings, emotions, and understanding of the world in a deep, creative, and thoughtful way that no other language can.

Music will accompany my life. I will always spread the power of music to as many people as I can. I hope the music I bring to others can inspire and lead people to pursue their dreams.”

Today’s Daily Joy is part of From the Top’s Musicians with Disabilities Special Initiative. Throughout the month of March 2023, From the Top is spotlighting young disabled and/or neurodivergent musicians who will share their talents and tell their stories in their own words.

“By highlighting the creativity and passion of young people, Daily Joy offers real hope for the future and reminds us that great art is still being made all around the country.”

Music has the unique ability to bring joy to our lives – especially in the hands of young people. Daily Joy is a reminder of music’s power to uplift, inspire, and unite.

Daily Joy is a project of From the Top. It began in the very early days of the Covid-19 pandemic and continues today to offer a much-needed respite from the anxiety and worry that we encounter in the world.

From the Top is a non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating the stories and artistry of young musicians through media and leadership programs. Learn more.

From the Top is grateful to the Richard K. Lubin Family Foundation for their generous support of Daily Joy.
