Bryce Ames (tuba), 17, originally from Trenton, Maine, is currently a senior at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, studying with Tom Riccobono. He began playing the tuba at the end of his freshman year, at the age of 14. His band teacher at the time had been searching for someone who was interested in learning the tuba and, as Bryce had been wanting to learn a brass instrument, he took his teacher up on the offer. Bryce was set up with a large Yamaha BBb tuba, and a meeting with his brass teacher a few days later. It was at that time that Bryce was introduced to Bill Whitener, a teacher that would make a huge impact on his life. Bryce took lessons from Mr. Whitener from the end of his freshman year to the end of his sophomore year. In November of his sophomore year, Bryce auditioned for the 2023-2024 Maine Allstate Band, placed first in the state for Tuba, and received the top score for the ensemble that year. Mr. Whitener also introduced Bryce to the Interlochen Arts Academy and encouraged him to apply. He was accepted and has had the opportunity to attend the Academy since his junior year. Through Interlochen, Bryce has had the opportunity to participate in master classes with John Gruber, Oberlin College, Chance Huiet, Michigan State University, and Alain Baer of the New York Philharmonic.

Receiving the Award will allow Bryce to purchase his own professional-level tuba that will carry him through college and into the professional field. The award funds will also support Bryce in helping to cover his Interlochen Academy tuition for his senior year.
