While you may not think of the bassoon as a solo instrument, we think 15-year-old bassoonist Nathan Shepherd might just change your mind!
For today’s Daily Joy, Nathan is sharing a brilliant performance of the very fun and buoyant Rondo from Weber’s Bassoon Concerto.
Lanesville, Indiana Nathan performed on Show 397 recorded in New York.
Nathan Shepherd (bassoon), 15, hails from Lanesville, Indiana. He is homeschooled and studies bassoon with Matthew Karr, Francisco Joubert, and Roger Soren. Nathan will be performing with the National Youth Orchestra in their 2021 summer program and was also a member of their NYO2 program. He was a prizewinner in the 2020 Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Louisville Orchestra Concerto competitions. Nathan has been the principal bassoonist of the University of Louisville Wind Ensemble and the Indiana All-State Orchestra. Outside of music, Nathan is passionate about visual design, including calligraphy and hand lettering as well as creating logos and visual identities.
Music has the unique ability to bring joy to our lives – especially in the hands of young people. Daily Joy is a reminder of music’s power to uplift, inspire, and unite.
Daily Joy is a project of From the Top. It began in the very early days of the Covid-19 pandemic and continues today to offer a much-needed respite from the anxiety and worry that we encounter in the world.
