During the early days of the pandemic, you may recall that the citizens of New York City would lean out their windows to cheer for the healthcare workers each night. This piece was inspired by that moment and is a tribute to all the Covid-19 essential workers. 17-year-old cellist Carter Medina performs “SEVEN” for Solo Cello by Andrea Casarrubios.

Kansas City, Missouri Carter performs on Show 434.
Carter Medina (cello), 17, is a junior at Blue Springs South High School in Kansas City, Missouri, and he has played cello since the age of three. He currently studies with Susie Yang, Associate Principal Cellist of the Kansas City Symphony, and has also studied with Christine Broxterman and Avi Friedlander from the Music Institute of Chicago. Carter is the co-principal cellist of the Youth Symphony of Kansas City and the Missouri All State Orchestra. He attends Sphinx Performance Academy at the Juilliard School during the summers and he also attends Heartland Chamber Festival in Kansas City and Ascent Cello Festival at the University of Cincinnati. Carter was featured in an Intel Commercial as a solo cellist in 2020, won the KC Federation of Music Teachers Concerto Competition in 2022 and was runner up in the Missouri Federation of Music Teachers Concerto Competition in 2022. He has performed in live master classes for Zlatomir Fung, Nancy Heir, Tanya Carey, and members of the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Philadelphia International Music Festival. Carter plans to attend a music conservatory after high school to continue his cello studies. Outside of music, he loves to be in nature, grow plants, and collect vinyl records.

Daily Joy is a project of From the Top. It began in the very early days of the Covid-19 pandemic and continues today to offer a much-needed respite from the anxiety and worry that we encounter in the world.
