Henry Tushman (piano), 18, from Wellesley, Massachusetts, has been recognized both nationally and internationally for his artistry as a pianist. Under the guidance of Dr. Sandra Hebert at the Rivers School Conservatory (RSC), Henry has not only developed his musical skills but also achieved notable accolades, including the conservatory-wide RSC Director’s Award in 2022. He was also a longtime member of the distinguished A. Ramón Rivera Senior Piano Seminar at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School. For six summers, Henry attended Cremona International Music Academy in Italy where he performed twice with the Cremona Academy Festival Orchestra as First Prize winner of the Cremona International Competition for Piano.
In 2019, Henry won First Prize in the Steinway Society of Massachusetts Piano Competition, which garnered his first opportunity to play at Boston Symphony Hall and sparked his love of performing. He subsequently won first prize in other competitions including The American Prize, Society of American Musicians, A. Ramón Rivera Piano Competition, Massachusetts Senior MTNA, DePaul National Concerto Competition, Young Musicians Inspiring Change, Bradshaw & Buono, the National League of Performing Arts, and the International Franz Liszt Center Piano Competition. In 2024, Henry was honored with the National YoungArts Award.
As a concerto soloist, Henry has performed with orchestras ten times including with the Orquestra do Algarve in Portugal, the Tarnὀw Chamber Orchestra in Poland, the Oistrakh Symphony in Chicago, the New England Philharmonic, the Rivers Symphony Orchestra, and the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra. His 2023 performance of the first movement of Mozart Concerto No.21 with the New England Philharmonic was lauded by the Boston Classical Review as a “lively, dancing account…[with] steady rhythmic energy and clear voicings…that helped bring this favorite to life.”
Henry has particularly enjoyed engaging in contemporary music and is grateful to have had opportunities to work closely with ground-breaking composers including Andrew List, Whitman Brown, Amy Reich, Lera Auerbach, and Elena Ruehr. On two occasions, he premiered works specifically composed for him, showcasing his versatility across musical styles. Outside of his solo pursuits, Henry has performed with chamber music ensembles in the Cremona International Music Academy and the Boston Music Institute, and as a volunteer and leader of the Continuo Boston community service organization. He is a senior at Wellesley High School. In addition to piano, Henry also enjoys playing soccer and singing in his school’s Keynote Singers. chorus.
